Business Flood Defence Case Study – Surrey

East Grinstead – Surrey

A children’s nursery school that required protection from a brook.

Flooding History

In December 2013, the nearby brook burst its banks. The banks were 12ft high so flooding was not anticipated.
On Christmas Eve, after heavy rain, the water flooded the nursery through doorways and in one room, a wooden floor with a void underneath it.
They had received a flood warning the previous day and had deployed sandbags, but these had proved ineffective.
The underfloor heating in one room had to be replaced, but thanks to a huge effort and a massive clearout by many of the staff over the Christmas period, the nursery was able to re-open early in the New Year as normal.

Products Supplied

Their insurance company had recommended getting 7 doors protected, but this would not have worked because of the wooden floor in one of the rooms. After getting a number of quotes, the nursery chose the UKFDA because they came up with a more reliable solution at a much better price than other companies were quoting.
The solution consisted of two Floodtite door panels and three Coniston Flood Barriers to protect wider, patio-door style openings. They also deployed twenty six Windermere blocks to protect the building with the raised wooden floor.
As a result of installing the flood protection their insurance premium only rose by 7% which was very good news.

Subsequent Use

Fortunately, the property has not been threatened with flooding since the installation. Last Christmas, the nursery deployed the flood protection over the holiday period just to ensure that they were not caught out by an unexpected event.

Customer Comment

“I’d certainly recommend the UKFDA. They were very good at collating the whole project and making sure that everything met our requirements. Adam came in person to make sure that everything was satisfactory and it was. Their pricing was much better than the other quotes I received. Overall, very impressed and pleased.”
